Tis the Season

No, not that season, not yet anyway.

It's the season for sniffles, sneezes, germs and other creepy crawlies we'd very much like to avoid.

So I'd like to introduce you to a few of our favorite essential oils for supporting the immune system and fending off invaders.

When it comes to germs it's helpful to first set up a solid defensive barrier with clean, healthy skin. We all know good hand washing is essential to avoiding illness, but why not beef up that hand washing routine with a mild, moisturizing hand soap loaded with bacteria-fighting essential oils.

A castor oil based hand soap won't dehydrate the skin and cause those tiny cracks that let the germs in. Tea tree oil is a known anti-microbial and is essential to a good hand soap. Citrus oils are also excellent to include as they fight germs and leave behind their lovely clean scent. Think lemon, orange, grapefruit, lime - yum!

Another good tactic is to keep our skin moisturized - both our hands and lips, again maintaining an intact barrier to protect us.

Coconut oil based moisturizers and lip balms are wonderfully healing - especially when combined again with the powerful tea-tree oil.

For irritated skin we can add soothing oils like chamomile and lavender.

In addition to keeping our barrier intact and healthy - we can also fight germs in the air by using an essential oil diffuser. Again tea tree oil and citrus help to fight germs in the air.

We can also diffuse oils that support our immune system like the Thieves blend. Thieves can also be diluted  and appplied topically for additional immune boosting.

Lice outbreak in school? Dilute Rosemary essential oil and tea tree oil in water and spritz on hair as a repellent.

Though it may be impossible to get through the long, cold NH winter without any sick days, adding essential oils to our arsenal of prevention is a one way to maintain our health and wellness.
